She will be presenting it at Cancer Connection's monthly support meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Bartlett classroom (1st floor of the hospital administration building).

June

National Cancer Survivors Day and Caregivers Luncheon: June 1. Walk begins at 11 a.m. and lunch starts at noon at the Baranof. Awards will be given for Medical Professional of the Year, Survivor of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year. The luncheon and the walk are free but we'd love an RSVP at 796-2273.

Book Reading: On Monday, Sept. 8, Joyce Parry-Moore will present a reading of her book manuscript, "Breast Dance: One Woman's Journey Beyond Surviving to Creating," at the Arts Council at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, with any donations offsetting space rental and supporting Team Survivor Perseverence.

Juneau Cancer Support Group Meeting: Tuesday, March 20, at the Salmon Creek office of Dr. Singsass.

Women Cancer Survivors' Retreat: March 9-11 (7 p.m. Friday to noon Sunday) at the Shrine of St. Therese. Call 796-2273 to reserve your spot. The cost is $75, and it includes two nights lodging, linens, and meals. The facilitator will be Susan Hedlund from Cancer Care Resources in Portland, Oregon. Susan was also the keynote speaker at the 2005 Women's Health Forum. The theme of the retreat is taking care of ourselves. Men's Health Forum: Wednesday, April 4, 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Centennial Hall. This event is free and open to the public, and will include healthy snacks. This year's speakers will be Geronimo Sahagun, M.D., who will speak on "A Cancer We Don't Like To Discuss;" and Jamie Bursell, BS, CES, CPT, who will give a talk on a simple approach to fitness for life. Juneau Health Fair: April 6 and 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centennial Hall. Free and low-cost health screenings and tests. Cancer Connection will have a booth at this event. For more information, view the event flyer, or visit the health fair Web site.

Two Divas, Four Breasts, One Cure: April 28, 7:30 p.m., at Northern Lights United Church. This Opera to GO concert will benefit Cancer Connection, and will feature Juneau soprano Joyce Parry Moore and Portland mezzo Beth Madsen Bradford. Doors open at 7 p.m. A silent auction and farewell dessert reception will follow. Admission: $15 general; $10 students/seniors, $5 kids under age 10; $35 family. Lynne Wunsch Memorial Day Fundraiser:
Saturday, May 5, 10:30 to 3 p.m. at Coastal Helicopters, 8995 Yandukin Drive. Pre-Season Glacier Flightseeing Icefield Excursion. Coastal Helicopters will donate funds from local tours done that day to the Cancer Connection Lynne Wunsch Travel Fund. Cost: $50. Coping With Blood Cancer: May 12, May 19, June 2, June 9, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.. Patient and Caregiver Support Group. This group meets by free conference call every Saturday for four weeks. Join us for an opportunity to obtain information and support as you cope with your diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one. Telephone group sessions are facilitated by Angela Lim, LICSW, Oncology Social Worker. Cost: There are no telephone charges to participate. Participants will use a toll-free number to access the weekly group. Celebration of Life Walk: Sunday, June 10, at noon, survivors and families will meet at Centennial Hall for a walk to the capitol and a group photo. Longeberger Fund-raiser: The local Longaberger consultants are once again hosting a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research through the Horizon of Hope Campaign and also to raise funds for the Cancer Connection. This year our event will be on Sunday, August 26, from 12-5 p.m. at the Jordan Creek Center.

September

Beat the Odds: Saturday, September 1. A woman's race against breast cancer: five-mile run and two-mile walk, 9 a.m. at Riverbend Elementary School. Cost: $25 for ages 14 and up, $20 for ages 13 and under. Register at Foggy Mountain, JRC--The Alaska Club, and Nugget Alaskan Outfitter. The first 500 to register will receive a T-shirt.

Luna Fest: Short Films by…for…about Women. October 20, 7 p.m. at Centennial Hall. Luna Fest is a fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women's issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities. This unique film festival will highlight women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine films by women filmmakers. The films range from animated shorts to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, body image, spirituality, relationships, cultural diversity, and breaking barriers. All proceeds from the Luna Fest premiere will go to Cancer Connection and the Breast Cancer Fund. Thus far, Luna Fest, which is sponsored by LUNA, the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, has raised over $100,000 for Breast Cancer Fund and over $250,000 for other women’s nonprofits. Plan to attend and help fund these worthwhile organizations! Donations will be taken at the door. Men’s Health Forum: Wednesday, March 22, Centennial Hall, 5-8 p.m. Free and open to the public. How about inviting your husband to the Men's Health Forum? It's a free date for you and your spouse. FYI, a healthy diet works equally well for your heart, preventing cancer, maintaining your overall good health. It also works equally well for men and women. We hope to see you there!

May 2006

Coastal Helicopter: Coastal Helicopters fundraiser for Cancer Connection's travel assistance program is held every May. The Lynne Wunsch Memorial Travel Fund was initially funded in 2002 with seed money from Coastal Helicopters, and goes on today with continued support from Coastal's annual helicopter rides over the Juneau Icefield. The seats for this event historically sell out early.

June 2006

Minnesota Symphonic Winds to Perform Benefit: On June 20, the Minnesota Symphonic Winds will stop in Juneau as part of an Alaska tour aboard the Sapphire Princess. They will perform from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church. The group is looking forward to performing at the invitation of Alaska's First Lady, Nancy Murkowski, for the benefit of Cancer Connection. "It is indeed an honor to perform in support of cancer awareness and prevention ... "
We anticipate that the Minnesota Symphonic Winds group will include approximately 100 participants, including 41 musicians.

Beat the Odds: Saturday, Sept. 2 at Riverbend Community School. This 15th annual fundraiser was given to Cancer Connection by Glacier Valley Rotary in 2006 to be their main fundraiser. This women's walk and 5K run will be at 9 a.m. The first 500 who register will receive a pink commemorative T-shirt. Click here to submit your registration online.
